TAFL History
2003 Founded by Tom Abel, Ohio Native living in Port Huron playing with 60 players 4 teams played indoors, used parents for officiating

2004 Started playing outdoors with 125 Players and 8 Teams, used parents for officiating

2005 260 Players , 10 teams with 4 defined communities , used parents and high school football players for officiating

2006 450 Players, 20 Teams

2007 Added Two new communities Algonac and Anchor Bay, appointed head official to bring in certified officiating to the league

2008 850 Players 40 teams, became AAU Member, added MHSAA Certified referees through an assigner process.

2009 999 total football players and cheerleaders, TAFL starts meeting with USA Football and Michigan Commissioners

2010 1040 total football and cheerleaders, Name Change to Thumb Area Football & Cheer Leading League..Still TAFL, President and other board members agree to take USA Football Coaching Certification, First Tournament “Rumble in the Thumb”, USA Football State Forum

2011 1099 total football players and cheerleaders, re-introduced mandatory coaches meeting, mandatory head coaches certified through USA Football, all coaches certified through AAU PCA, represented Michigan Youth Football Organizations at the USA/NFL Youth Summit

2012 1197 total football players and cheerleaders, All coaches certified through USA Football

2013 1086 total participants, Full affiliation through USA Football, all coaches certified through USA Football Heads up Football and CDC

2014 996 total participants implemented Player Safety Coaches in each community.
